  • JAPAN, NIKKO - August 2012 - The imposing gate, the Yomei-mon, is the best-known symbol of the shrine. As many as 500 brightly-colored carvings fill the front of the gate in colors such as white, black, gold, navy, green, blue, and vermilion. The finest decorative skills available in Japan at the time were used on the gate. Toshogu Shrine is where the famous Shogun of the Edo Period in the 17th century, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was worshiped after his death. It became as luxurious and elaborate as it looks today when the grandson of Ieyasu, the third Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, reconstructed it. The engravings on the Yomei-mon Gate are especially overwhelming, provided with every luxury imaginable and redolent in gorgeous colors. site calssified as Japanese Cultural property and world heritage by UNESCO [FR] La porte Yomei mon, symbol du Toshogu, comprenant près de 500 coloris dont les principaux sont le blanc, noir, ord, bleu marine, vert et vermillon.
